[clever title]

The "army of mold growing up from the floor."
ICK
[This week's post starts somewhat unintelligible because Hermana Schomburg has received some exceptionally exciting news from home.] :)

congratulations everybody

WHAT EVEN MY BROTHERLHYOTHAOIDHYLKGHALDKJ MY BROTHERL GOT EN AGAGED AND HE IS SODING THET HTIGNGS OF MAMRRRIAGE HE IS DOIDNG THTE THIGNS

ANDRWEW

LITERALDYY WHAT EVENNS

OH MLGYSOH

oky i am gonig to stop doing that right abuot now because the truth is that i ahvent even gathered my thoughts enough yet to have anythign else to say but just keyboard smashes so maybe i'll have more words next week and my fingers will be calmer and not going as fast as possible to type everything

so anyway

okay

my brother is getting married

literally

okay

okay

okay

i'm calm

Andrew and Sarah

anyway

SO, let me tell you the nice big old story of this week.

It starts out on Tuesday

Tuesday we had intercambios with our hermana lideres again except that I stayed in our sector and Hermana Rhoads went to their sector, so, I led Hermana Nielson around all day and it was all rather dramatic what with we have several people that think their houses are haunted and are asking blessings and such that we have to call the elders for but then they don't want to be just with the elders, so we've been going around to people's houses with the elders and just... drama. So, some of that drama was happening on Tuesday but also, the dueño of our apartment came to look at it with E' Vizcarra and for some reason they didn't have the keys to our apartment in the office, so we had to go back to the apartment for that and then everybody was really angry at the elders that were in our apartment before us because there are things like holes in the walls and all the mold that is happening and just a bunch of stuff that we obviously didn't do

but also they were laughing really hard

because

well

okay

so

i took the doors off the closet because they didn't work

and then

we got the sewing machine and didn't have a place to put it

so

i put the closet doors over the couch and made it into a table and the dueño and Elder Vizcarra asked if that was the elders too but... it was us... and they just thought it was SO FUNNY because it was just such a manly way of thinking, but anyway

haha

sometimes i think about that and can't stop laughing actually because we totally didn't even think twice about the closet doors because, let's be real, our motto is 'act like a lady, think like a man' so that

but anyway

then we went to give a blessing to a family and then we went later (in the noche) to a lesson but in a taxi because it was really far and as we were getting out of the taxi... something happened...

something happened to my knee...

and I suddenly was feeling a lot of pain and a clicking type thing when I walked and I was just in A LOT OF PAIN and so we taught the lesson and then just went home and called the mission nurse and she told me to ice it and things but we had zone conference the next day and she would be there so she would just look at it

so

she talked to me a little bit at zone conference and then sent me straight to Hermana Videla and she looked at it

and

put me

on

reposo

AND WE WERE ON REPOSO FOR 3 DAYS

AND IT WAS SO BORING

AND IT WAS SO TERRIBLE NEVER LET ANYTHING BAD HAPPEN TO YOU BECAUSE REPOSO IS SO BAD

but so, we reposo-ed and people came in and out of our house to look at the damage and everything and to decide what to do and then

well

that's pretty much all that we did

there are partidos all the time because of the Copa America and it is sort of being held here in Chile so whenever there is a partido, we have to go in early

partido is game

like a soccer game

that is what i am referring to haha sorry yeah okay anyway

I just don't even know what else we did this week

mostly we just were sad and quiet and not doing anything and it was excruciating

Hermana Rhoads playing only minor chords and
being sad - reposos is hard on missionaries

also there hasn't been rain at all yet this winter

which is SO STRANGE

and the air is very contaminated so we're not allowed to exercise outside anymore until it rains and uh

i just have no clue

my dad is old now [Hermana Schomburg's dad had his 50th birthday this weekend]

i don't even remember if anything cool and exciting happened to me this week

i think mostly

just we didn't do anything

but rest

and rest

and rest

and rest

and rest

BUT WE WILL BE HARD AT WORK THIS WEEK EXCEPT FOR TODAY BECAUSE THERE'S ANOTHER PARTIDO AND ALSO ON THE FOURTH OF JULY

but that reminds me of something

the other day i was sitting around thinking to myself and then i thought, 'wow school is out but it is practically july already time is passing so quickly pretty soon all my theatre friends will be in college-'

and then i stopped

and realized

THAT SO MANY PEOPLE GRADUATED AND I DIDN'T EVEN SAY ANYTHING TO ACKNOWLEDGE IT HOLY CANNOLI EVERYBODY GRADUATED AND IS GOING ON TO DO WONDERFULLY THINGS LIKE LITERALLY WHAT EVEN HOW ARE YOU ALL SO OLD WHAT EVEN

SOMEBODY THE OTHER DAY ALSO WAS LIKE 'if youre an actress then act something for me' AND I WAS LIKE 'well dont tell me what to do first of all and second of all

the last show i was in

was almost 2 years ago' AND THEN I SCREAMED TO MYSELF FOR 12 YEARS

but anyway, sorry i'm so very boring this week. That is all that I have to report. I will have a much more lively and spiritual report next week, I promise.

We're moving this week also, if i didnt mention that. We're supposed to move on Thursday but we also have entrevistas [interviews] with presidente that day so... we'll see actually.

love you all!

Micros Go Wild!

The plot thickens with this repeat pic.
Well.

This week.

This week has been WAY SUPER SUPER SUPER WONDERFUL. In some ways.

Also in other ways it has been 12 hard. [Keep in mind, 12 means A LOT or several or excessive in Hermana Schomburg vocabulary and she uses it "12" times in this message. :) ]

We weren't able to meet with either of our investigators that have a baptismal date and even though we talked to both of them about coming to church on Sunday, neither of them were able to go, so they both lost their dates. BUT ALSO, we have a member that just recently moved here from Perú and she is living with a whole bunch of nonmembers, SOOO, we're teaching them all with her and that has been really good. Also, we found a woman while we were contacting one day and she gave us her address and we went over there last night and an actual real life miracle happened.

Let me explain to you a little bit about our sector: people will give you their address or their phone number or whatever and if it's not fake, then they probably don't actually want to talk to you so when you show up for your appointment with them, they're not there or sometimes ''not there''.

So, the thing was that we hadn't set up an appointment with her, but we went to her apartment building nonetheless and the man at the desk called up to see if we could come in and we were both basically 100% ready for a no or for her to not even answer

and then

SHE ANSWERED

and what's more

SHE INVITED US TO GO UP

AND SO WE WENT UP

AND

HER ENTIRE FAMILY WAS THERE

ALL OF HER FAMILY

AND THEY ALL WANTED TO HEAR WHAT WE HAD TO SAY

AND SO WE TAUGHT THEM

AND TALKED WITH THEM

AND THEY ARE SO EXCITED TO HEAR MORE

AND TO TALK ABOUT GOD AND JESUS

AND JUST

THEY

I CAN'T

MY WORDS CANNOT EXPLAIN HOW RARE OF AN OCCURRENCE THIS IS

OR WHAT AN ACTUAL MIRACLE

I JUST

I LITERALLY DON'T HAVE THE WORDS OR ENOUGH CAPS

TO EXPLAIN

HOW READY THIS FAMILY IS OR ANYTHING I JUST CANNOT EVEN EXPLAIN BUT I AM SO EXCITED TO KEEP TEACHING THEM AND THEY ALL COMMITTED TO READ THE BOOK OF MORMON AND THE RESTORATION (took me 12 years to figure out how to spell that in English) PAMPHLET THAT WE LEFT AND I AM JUST SO EXCITED FOR EVERYTHING

But alas I also have other things to talk about.

SOOO, I told y'all about the apartment situation and everything where we don't have electricity in our room anymore? (lol just realized that I think I only told my dad don't worry we just stopped having electricity in our room but we have a gas heater too it's okay no se preocupen [do not worry]) Well... the situation is a bit more dire now, haha.

SOO, what happened is... one morning I wake up and it is grossly and coldly humid in our room because humidity is a thing and so is the cold and I sit up and go to do my morning prayers and then

I spot it

a thing

a gross

fuzzy

thing

in the corner

on the wall

next to my bed

so I move my bed out from the wall and tHERE IS LIKE A WHOLE ARMY OF MOLD GROWING UP FROM THE FLOOR AND IT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE BECAUSE OUR ROOM, THAT CORNER IN PARTICULAR, IS IN THE VERY CORNER OF THE BUILDING AND THERE ARE NO BATHROOMS ABOVE OR BELOW OR ANYTHING AND IT WAS 12 GROSS AND SO WE CALLED THE PENSIONISTA RIGHT AWAY AND HE CAME OVER AND WAS LIKE, 'ew that's kinda gross' AND HNA RHOADS AND I WERE LIKE 'NOOOOOOOOOOOOO YOU DON'T UNDERSTAAAAAAAAND' AND SO HE AND THE HISTORIADOR (that's his companion) LOOKED AT IT A LITTLE MORE AND THEN THEY WERE LIKE, 'there's probably just a bathroom on the other side of the wall' (but of course all of this is in Spanish because the pensionista is from Peru and the historiador is from Bolivia you're just lucky I'm translating for you) AND WE WERE LIKE 'NO THERE ISN'T NO THERE ISN'T YOU DON'T UNDERSTAAAAAAAAAAAAAND' AND SO THEN THEY WERE LIKE 'well we can't do anything for you right now, we'll call a pensionista (like a real pensionista because the pensionista is actually an elder that calls the pensionista when we have problems) and send him over' [I'll attempt to explain - Hermana Schomburg and Hermana Rhoads called the Elders (missionaries) who are basically the "go-betweens" between the missionaries and the apartment superintendents and managers. They looked at the mold and determined they needed to call the actual apartment super.]

AND THEN THEY LEFT AND THEN NO JOKE

THIRTY MINUTES LATER

WE GET A CALL FROM HIM AND HE'S LIKE 'well you guys should probably start packing your things because we're getting you a new apartment' SO HAHA OUR P-DAY TODAY IS GOING TO BE US PACKING

and also we moved our beds into the other room (and I washed all my bedding no se preocupen [do not worry]) but the beds a little too big because the other room is 12 small so... haha, I don't know, it's all just silly. The electricity is working again though (and even when it wasn't, we called Elder Vizcarra [the pensionista] and he and Elder Ortega [his companion the historiador] brought us blankets, we are well cared for, no se preocupen), just that we're in a tiny little room feeling like we're having a sleepover every night and it's just silly. But anyway.

We've been told we'll be out of our apartment by the end of the month haha, but really don't worry too much, the mold isn't the only reason we're moving. The thing is that we had elders in our apartment for 5 years before us (an actual 5 years not an exaggeration) and so it's a bit grody anyway and it kinda was when they got it and the dueños (I can't remember what that is in english) [owners] are a bit lame in our building, so they've been trying to move everybody out of our building little by little and the mold in a peculiar place (which would be the responsibility of the dueño of our apartment, but he doesn't want to take care of it) was just the right thing to get us started in the process, so that's all.

So... that.

BUT NOW LET ME TELL YOU THE STORY THAT GOES ALONG WITH THE TITLE OF THIS EMAIL

so

a micro is what we call a bus (pronounced meekro) and so the other day, Hna Rhoads and I were on a micro, going to a cita [appointment]. So, the micro stops and Hna Rhoads looks around and then suddenly says, 'oh, I think we need to get off here' and so she stands up and gets off but it's obviously kind of late and the driver is getting ready to close the doors so anyway she gets off and I'm on the stairs right behind her with a small fear developing in my heart and suddenly-

BOOP

(that was the best sound effect I could think of right then sorry)

THE DOORS CLOSE

ON ME

LITERALLY THE DOORS OF THE MICRO CLOSE ON ME AND TRAP ME NOT EVEN JUST RIGHT BEFORE I CAN GET OFF OR RIGHT AFTER

THEY CLOSE ME IN THEM I AM TRAPPED BETWEEN THE DOORS OF A MICRO

and when micro doors shut

they shut

SO I WAS JUST KIND OF IN SHOCK COS I HAD BEEN MID STORY OR SOMETHING AND I WASN'T PANICKING OR ANYTHING I WAS JUST KIND OF LIKE 'what has happened' AND EVEN MORE SO to be honest, MY FIRST THOUGHT WAS DEFINITELY 'well this is embarrassing' BUT ANYWAY THEN HERMANA RHOADS WAS TRYING TO PRY THE DOORS OPEN AND I WAS JUST KIND OF STANDING THERE LIKE 'why has this happened to me' AND THEN THIS OLD GUY IN THE BACK OF THE MICRO STARTS YELLING 'LA PUERTA LA PUERTA' [THE DOOR THE DOOR] AND FINALLY THE DUDE OPENS THE DOOR AGAIN ANd then I stepped off and stood by Hna Rhoads while she laughed into old age.

So that happened.

Also, this picture (which is the only picture I have for this week, I apologize) is a picture of a pan of brownies I made. Kind of. I made it and gave half to the elders and then Hna Rhoads cut herself a brownie that was in SILLY place so I cut myself a brownie in a sillier place. And that's all there is to it.

And that's all I have to say this week folks, soo

They Call Me Elder Schomburg

Well, not everybody calls me Elder Schomburg, most people on the streets just say 'Elder', lol, like anybody can say Schomburg (but the new asistente's name is Elder Adcock and he has nearly as much trouble as I do when it comes to people proouncing your name in church). But anyway, let me explain all this. So, most people associate missionaries here with elders, hombres, hermanos, whatever, but because elder isn't actually a word here (it's actually a name more often than not, so people are confused when they see that everybody's name is Elder) they use it to refer to pretty much any missionary they see, so, people very rarely call us Hermanas in the streets, and I have gotten accustomed to being called elder a lot even though I'm just not even an elder.

That didn't really matter but it was a good title for an email and it was just a tidbit that I realized I hadn't said yet.

So haha yeah, this email has nothing to do with that.

OKAY SO WHAT DID I DO THIS WEEK YOU ASK?

Well, not whole lot, once again, but we worked REALLY HARD and I took my biggest brother's advice to work so hard that I come home exhausted every night and everything has just felt... better. Not that it has felt bad or anything, it's always felt good, but it feels even better when I know that I've put in my whole cien por cien [a hundred percent]

I JUST LOVE BEING A MISSIONARY SO MUCH AND IT'S REALLY QUITE HARD BUT I LOVE IT SO MUCH. I LOVE IT. THE GOSPEL IS TRUE ONE HUNDRED PERCENT AND I WANT TO SHOUT IT FROM THE ROOFTOPS. I know with ALL MY HEART that Joseph Smith was a prophet called of God and I know that God has a plan for us and if we only just trust in Him, we can do anything! I love this gospel SO MUCH and I am infinitely grateful to be here, set apart as a missionary, to teach and help the people of Chile. And I say that in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

but also I have more things to say ;)

Alright, so, this week I realized something that I really really want to do.

I really... really... REALLY.... LOVE....

LANGUAGES.

And I hadn't even thought until the other day that I get to have the Don de Lenguas [Gift of Tongues] my entire mission and that there are tons of people who learn more than one language on their missions and I WANT TO LEARN ALL THE LANGUAGES NOW. SO MUCH. I WANT IT REALLY BAD. I found some French folletos [literature] in our closet so I've been looking at them every once in a while. I want to talk more formally to Presidente about it during our interviews this cambio [transfer] just because I feel like that is what I need to do. And of course, I'm still learning Spanish, so maybe for later, but we'll see what Pres says.

Speaking of Pres, I've been asked if we ever actually talk to him and stuff so here is the answer! We, as the 'office hermanas' see him probably more than other sectors do, but actually, he and Hermana Videla don't live in our mission so they're not at the office all the time... but we see them at zone conferences and they spoke at our stake conference and... I dunno, one time we went into the office to print out our new ward directory and he helped us do it... and yeah. He and Hermana Videla are really awesome :) Presidente is kind of like a little Lorax man. I love them a lot :)

(To answer a question from my momma) my heart is full, I love Chile and missionary work and my companion and the office elders: all is well, all is well.

But also I'm sick DE NUEVO [AGAIN] so that's not cool. But luckily, we have NINE BILLION ELDERS IN OUR WARD so I asked one for a blessing of health and they were able to give me one right away after church ended. We haven't had to spend any extra time inside :)

except for

when there are games [soccer]

which by the way the last game CHILE BEAT ECUADOR HAHAHAHA TOMA ANDREW TTTOOOOMMMMAAAA

But anyway, when there are games, we have to go in early. Today there's a game as well, so actually, after P-day is over, we'll just go home and do weekly planning and then stay inside doing nothing..

except maybe making brownies.

I make a lot of brownies and we share them with the office elders. The office elders give us eggs, we make brownies, it all works out. As a matter of fact, there's not really anything else that I can make... haha... yeah, well, who NEEDS ANYTHING BUT BROWNIES ANYWAY

THE LONGEST STAIRCASE EVER
When you think you see the top, zoom in and you'll see that it just keeps going

OH I KEEP FORGETTING TO MENTION THAT WE SUBIRED THE CERRO TODAY WHICH IS A SPANGLISH WAY OF SAYING WE HIKED UP THE HILL. We wanted to take a special trail called the 'excursionist trail' but as it turns out

as we found out

the hard way

it doesn't exist

or maybe it does and it literally is just that you make it up and climb the hill in whatever way possible because that would be rather clever

but anyway, so we climbed the hill and it was super cool :)

The clouds are not clouds at all they are SMOG
ALWAYS SMOG

I MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE BOUGHT A CHILEAN RAIN STICK BECAUSE

BECAUSE

RAIN STICK

CHILE

RRRAAAIIINNN SSSTTTIIICCCKKK

A squad of mutt dogs taking a nap
Chile is pretty well-known for having multitudes of stray dogs running about
Also, as we were going up, we stopped for empanadas, and then this family came to the stand we were at and started talking to each other in Spanglish but they had very distinct accents and SURPRISE they were from Australia??? So we talked with them for a little bit... in English... which always feels really weird. I am forgetting how to sound like a normal person and not a robot that speaks English. It's like... I don't know, speaking English sounds so formal and i just

I DON'T KNOW WHAT'S HAPPENING ANYMORE OKAY

But anyway, we talked to them and shared a Plan of Salvation pamphlet and it was really cool! We talked all about how we were missionaries and they were very confused that we worked before to get money to pay to come here and do this. And they were also confused about whether or not we were nuns... and why we weren't wearing white because we... wear white all the time... I guess... but anyway, that was a fun little adventure :P

but anyway, sorry I don't have any fun stories from this week. I think I'm missing something... but maybe not... we just worked really hard this week and it was really great :)

I'm still alive, still happy, STILL WAITING TO HEAR FROM ANY OF MY FRIENDS *glares at friends* still answering to Elder, Hermana, and mijita, trying new foods, talking to people, smiling, walking, breathing, being COLD, all that!

Hermana Schomburg buried in blankets and sweatshirts on her bed in their apartment.
She said, "There is a picture of Chandler Sperry in Chile all bundled up and well,
the plugs in our bedroom are not currently working, so we have had to
bundle up a whole lot so yeah."

OH WAIT

oh

oh

oh

this is a cosa

a cosa that has happened

i

have reached

3 months

THAT IS LITERALLY A SIXTH OF MY MISSION

IF MY MISSION WERE THE CCM FOR MY LIFE, I WOULD HAVE ALREADY BEEN THERE A WEEK

12

HELLO NOTHING HAPPENED THIS WEEK SORRY HAHA

Well, okay, so here's what happened, summed up very quickly because I don't have a whole heck of a lot of time

1) Literally every single appointment we had scheduled this week cancelled except for one. Literally. Every. Single. One.

2) Hermana Rhoads got sick this week and we were in the house for two days. TWO.

3) really, nothing else happened. Nothing at all. I literally cannot think of another thing that happened.

OH WAIT

I KNOW WHAT HAPPENED

I made

cream cheese mints

and

BROWNIES

while Hna Rhoads was in reposo [repose - rest, sleep]

i made two batches of brownies: the first was just normal brownies (BUT ACTUALLY THEY WEREN'T NORMAL BECAUSE I'M IN CHILE AND WE'RE AT A DIFFERENT ELEVATION AND THEY RROOSSEE AND PUFFED UP LITERALLY WHAT THAT HAS NEVER HAPPENED IN MY LIFE THEY WERE CAKEY MOTHER THEY WERE CAKEY BROWNIES) but the second... oh the second batch. We gave the first batch to the elders in the office but we kept the second batch because let's be honest, the first was just a test run (sorry not sorry) but the second...

half the pan we filled with brownie batter and also....

MANJAR [delicacy - seriously I have no idea what it might have been]

and the other half we filled with brownie batter and also....

OREOS

and they were quite magical.

ALSO, okay, so, we do this thing at my house where if you start coughing or choking or something, we always say, 'Arms up!' and that's just the thing and that's our thing and we do that thing

and yesterday

we were having lunch with our ward mission leader (the V family is the ACTUAL GREATEST) and I started choking on my spit (what's new) and Hna V was like, '¡Levanta tus manos!' WHICH IS SPANISH FOR 'RAISE YOUR HANDS' WHICH IS BASICALLY 'ARMS UP' AND I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH MYSELF FOR A LONG TIME BECAUSE I WAS CONFUSED AND

SHE

SHE SAID THE BOOP

I'M IN CHILE

AND HERMANA V CHANNELED MY MOTHER

FROM 5000 MILES AWAY

It was like a weird out of body experience.

It was so weird.

IT WAS SO WEIRD.

also I found my camera

it was literally in my bag the entire time haha whoops

The opposite extremes of the sector -
a little street thing in the middle of the "neighborhood"
and
the pretty view from the top of a hill
Hermana Schomburg covers it all

but anyway, I have questions to answer now!

One of our investigators is set to be baptized on poppi's birthday (hehe) and the other a week later, but we'll probably have to scoot them back because they haven't been able to make it to church yet (oof).

Best and worst of this week? Best was probably... INITIATING THINGS BECAUSE I'M SUPPOSED TO LEAD THE SECTOR THIS TRANSFER SINCE TRAINING AND ALL THAT AND IT IS HARD TO INITIATE THINGS BUT THAT IS WHAT MAKES IT MY FAVORITE and my worst... was probably... not feeling like I'm making a lot of a difference and being a bit frustrated with citas [appointments] falling through... :S

also I should clarify something:

Hna Rhoads and I use the number 12 as an extreme exaggeration. It's just funnier when you say, 'There wERE SO MANY PIGEONS THERE WERE LIKE.... 12' because 12 is not a very big number, but we use it to signify a lot of something. Or sometimes if something was 12 hard to do, that's pretty much as hard as it gets. So, when I say there were 12 people at the transfer meeting, I mean that there were like 60. I don't remember how big my mission is person wise... I think somebody once used the number 200ish but I have no clue if that is anywhere near the ballpark or if I've started playing on the football field if you're picking up what I'm putting down

Geographically? I think I heard somebody say that my mission is one of the smallest in the world compared to Antofagasta which is one of the largest... but I might be making that up. Literally don't trust a word I say because I actually have NO CLUE WHERE I AM OR WHAT'S HAPPENING DON'T WORRY MOM I'M OKAY

:)

and I also don't know what the Latino: North American ratio is... my companion is North American and so am I. So far that's 0: 2

(there are 6 Latinos in my zone, I believe and there are 9 companionships, so that is sort of a small number I am thinking, but I don't know what it's like in the rest of the mission. All three of our asistentes (there are three now because two are going home this transfer) are North American but one looks kind of Latino haha yeah uh I don't know I am sorry)

BUT ANYWAY I HAVE GOTTA GO but everybody have a good week and all that stuff please remember to write

please

PLEASE WRITE ME

please

CCCCCCCCIIIIIIIIIAAAAAAAAAAAAOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Hermana Schomburg hadn't actually seen the mountains until this past week
because the smog has been so bad
She said, "GUESS WHAT'S ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THOSE MOUNTAINS!
ARGENTINA!!
HOLY CANNOLI
They finally peeked out from their hiding place and THEY'RE SO PRETTY"

"So many lights at the nightime because surprise I am in the city
I am a city girl now watch out"

"Fabric with planes and plane words that remind me of poppi"
[poppi is what she calls her dad]
"i bought it and made a skirt"
